Groomer

Summary:

The purpose of this position is to provide care, grooming and basic needs to patients who are being groomed, boarded. The Groomer plays an integral role in between-visit care and watching for signs of illness or various conditions.

Position Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Graduate of a recognized grooming school desirable.

On the job experience in lieu of formal training.

Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs; requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time.

Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Wage:

The Groomer position pays _______% of the position’s production. The Groomer is financially responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all hand tools, while the practice is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all large equipment (i.e. tables, dryers, tubs, etc.)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Observe patient appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Take charge of and handle patients; as required, restrain hard to control animals.
  • Admit pets to be groomed noting owner’s specific instructions and pick up time.
  • Perform grooming services, including clipping, hand scissoring, medicated and general cleansing, parasite control baths, pedicures, medicated dips and ear cleansing, as required for each pet.
  • Provide care for animal housed/visiting the hospital; perform work according to established methods specified in hospital procedure manual or following special instructions; report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to veterinary technicians or veterinarians.
  • Perform all general maintenance of grooming room and yard; clean cages, tubs, grooming tables, and yard at least once daily; vacuum floor; mop floor weekly; empty trash; clean clipper blades, scissors and brushes after use; perform monthly dryer and clipper maintenance.
  • Groom animals utilizing techniques which vary depending on type of hair, coat, breed and owner instructions; bathe and dry animals; perform pedicures and clean ears.
  • Recommend retail products that would aid in home grooming care of pets, as required.
  • Ability to recognize that teamwork is essential for a quality practice.
  • Willingness to stay after hours or work extra hours when needed, especially during holidays.
  • Display tact and diplomacy with staff members and clients.
  • Apply knowledge and skills in controlling and/or handling individual animal temperament. Possess ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for grooming.
  • Knowledge of grooming practices for wide range of small animals, including hand-scissoring skills.
  • Possess above average customer service skills.

We are seeking to add a PT or FT Veterinarian to our busy and well-established 2-doctor small animal hospital and boarding facility. We are looking for someone who would be committed to practicing the highest standards of patient care, passionate about client education, and ready to create professional rapport with our amazing staff. The ideal candidate would be friendly, compassionate, and motivated to care for pets and people. We would welcome any other niche interests including holistic medicine! New(er) graduates are also encouraged to apply and will be considered. We can provide support, guidance & mentorship. Must be a licensed DVM (or have the ability to become licensed) in the state of California.
